3 things you didn’t know about NYS Vehicle Inspections

posted on

In the great state of New York, the law requires that every vehicle registered in the state must meet the minimum standards for safety, emission and operation on public roadways, and receive a clear inspection from a licensed NYS vehicle inspector’s office. A fully-maintained vehicle most likely has nothing to worry about, but besides the basic inspection requirements everyone has to follow there are a few surprising provisos that must be present if you expect your vehicle to pass.

1. Vehicle inspections are required every 12 months, and you have through the last day of the expiration month

1. Most people know that each vehicle in New York must be inspected every 12 months, but by law you have until the last day of the expiration month punched on your current inspection sticker. However, we encourage you to get your inspection earlier than the final day. In the event you're suddenly unable to get your vehicle to the shop on the day you planned, you'll be able to choose another one if you don't wait until the end.
Don’t tempt fate: get your vehicle inspected early!

2. Buying or selling a vehicle? You’ll need an inspection

1. Besides being required by law, having an inspection when you buy or
sell a vehicle is just good old common sense. Inspecting when you buy
means that a qualified vehicle inspector has given your new car a onceover, so you can be reasonably sure that you’re not buying a lemon.
Likewise when you sell a vehicle, it’s a mark of credibility to potential
buyers if they know the current owner has had the vehicle freshly
inspected. Regardless, if the vehicle is ever registered in a different
name, inspections are required.

3. Inspectors will check the tires, but not the spare

1. Vehicle inspections require specific tread depths and overall functional
condition of your tires, but what many motorists tend to overlook is that
a spare tire has nothing to do with the NYS inspection process. But
since spare tires are often subjected to dry rot and deterioration, it’s a
good idea to have the spare checked at inspections as well. It won’t
prevent you from passing if there is a problem with it, but knowing your
spare is ready when you need it is just good driver preparation!
